Introductory Mycology: Basics for Handling and Identifying Fungi Isolated from the Production Environment
OUTLINE
This comprehensive two-day course is designed to educate participants in the elements of mycology in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic environments. Many microbiologists are faced with increased sampling and environmental monitoring samples from the production environment, effective sample handling involves an understanding of how to culture and identify common molds in a timely manner. This course is designed for those who have little or no background in mycology and who desire a better understanding of how fungi are identified.
This course is intended for QA, QC and Regulatory professionals who want to expand their knowledge of mycology in the face of increased FDA interest in molds as a contaminant of the manufacturing facility and in finished product. Lab managers and technicians will learn more about mycology in the manufacturing environment and new techniques for fungal identification. Participants will gain a full and objective understanding of how to provide safeguards to their facilities, and how to examine and identify molds should they occur.
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for laboratory managers and/or technicians who would like to learn more about mycology in the manufacturing environment and new techniques for identification of fungi. No previous experience is required. This course will be useful if you are newly assigned to oversee a microbiology/environmental monitoring function, or are an experienced technician who would like to learn more about the current technology.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, attendees will be able to:
- How molds differ from other microbes/ bacteria
- The sampling process- how molds are isolated and how to design a sampling program
- Classification of molds
- Techniques used to identify molds
- Sample preparation for microscopic examination
- Characteristics of the major fungal groups
