In-house Courses
Identification and Characterization of
Microorganisms Using Molecular Methods
OUTLINE
This course is designed to educate participants in the theory and practical applications of using molecular methods for the identification and strain level characterization of bacteria.
The course covers the main areas of contemporary molecular biology, including DNA preparation, amplification of DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, cycle sequencing, automated fluorescent DNA sequencing, RiboPrinting, AFLP and data analysis. Participants will learn how to analyze data using a variety of different approaches. Much of the time will be spent learning how to access and use the public databases, which are available on the Internet; however, commercially available databases will also be discussed.
Please note that by the nature of this topic class size must be restricted. Register early to secure a place in this course.
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for laboratory managers and/or technicians who would like to use molecular methods as a means of identifying bacteria and fungi, which are difficult to identify using standard microbiological procedures. This course will provide participants an opportunity to learn the basic theory and application of molecular identification methods for environmental monitoring and QA/QC programs. No previous molecular biology experience is required.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Theory and history of microbial phylogeny
- How to prepare DNA for analysis
- Theory and practical applications of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), including primer design and evaluation
- Theory and practical applications of automated fluorescent sequencing
- Theory and practical application of DNA fragment based typing methods
- Data acquisition, data reduction, and data analysis using commercially available software/databases and public databases via the Internet.
